Lines of Research

Research activities focus on the following topics:

Tematics 1 Enhancement of Biodiversity

  • Enhanced plant biodiversity through molecular (DNA), morphological (phenotyping) and biochemical (target compounds) characterization of tree and shrub species of agricultural interest (e.g, cherry, fig, hop, olive, pomegranate, grapevine)

Tematics 2 Evaluation of plant response to environmental stresses and research of production sustainability

  • Evaluation of physiological responses to stressors: study of abiotic stresses (water in particular)
  • Terroir assessment, zoning and identification of the most suitable areas for cultivation with evaluation of raw material composition as a function of the agroecosystem.
  • Sustainable management of cropping systems: development of agronomic systems that promote environmental sustainability and quality of crop production.

Tematics 3 Post-harvest quality assessments

  • Analysis of crop product quality: with morphological, biochemical and molecular markers, evaluating post-harvest changes.
  • Study of plant microstructure in response to technological, traditional, thermal and non-thermal treatments.
  • Application collaborations with agricultural supply chains (hops, olive), evaluating traceability, varietal certification, sustainable field management and supply chain quality.

Certification Center Recognized by MASAF

The CRO.P.S. Research Group of the Department of Food and Drug sciences of the University of Parma is the Hops Certification Center recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (formerly MiPAAF, now MASAF), according to DM 4281 of July 20, 2015. It is the first center in Italy with this recognition (at least until the latest sources) for the functions provided for in Regulation (EC) 1850/2006.

The Certification Center has the following tasks:

  • Certification of hop batches produced in Italy, which includes the examination of the cones (sampling and analysis) to verify qualitative characteristics of commercial type, for example purity, and any residues or physical contamination.
  • Verification of traceability, i.e., documentation attesting to the product's origins, varieties, growing conditions, and processing.
