Line of research of pharmaceutical chemistry

My research activity is currently focused on the design and synthesis of new Antiviral, Antitumor and Antibacterial drugs in collaboration with several national and international partners. Special focus is on developing new drugs for nelgected diseases.

One of the main objectives of this multidisciplinary research is the development of versatile synthetic methodologies for the generation of new chemical entities (NCE) of biological interest. Modern chemical techniques (combinatorial chemistry, microwave-assisted and multicomponent reactions) are used to expand the chemical diversity around targeted, privileged and natural scaffolds thus accelerating the discovery of new drugs.

Among the most significat results recently obtained: discovery of the first “nuclotide-competing RT inhibitors” (NcRTIs) with anti-HIV anctivity; discovery of the first inhibitors of human DDX3 with anti-HIV activity; discovery of new allosteric inhibitors of Bcr-Abl kinase active against the T315I mutant and endowed with a peculiar "switching mechanism".
