Lines of Research

The research lines of the BIOFAR research group are characterized by the multidisciplinary study of medicinal plants, from the point of view of pharmaceutical botany and phytochemistry, with in vitro and in silico efficacy and safety evaluations for the pharmaceutical, food supplementation and cosmetic fields.

Active research projects include:

Phytochemical analyses and quality control of herbal products

  • Quality control according to Official Pharmacopoeias, ISO standards or national regulations of plant products on the market
  • Study of plant matrices for optimization of extraction processes
  • Study of stability of raw materials and finished products
  • Phytochemical characterization of plant extracts and study of biodiversity of cultivated and wild plant species

Study of plant matrices, synergy and interactions of the constituents of a phytocomplex

  • Integrated analytical approach/bioinformatic preparations/in vitro cell free and cell based assays for the study of medicinal plants of ethnobotanical interest and plant medicines traditional
  • Investigations of botanicals under EFSA or EMA attention for their safety of use

Plant Biotechnologies

  • Study of phytocomplexes derived from in vitro suspension cultures
